As a scientific and research location Vorpommern offers ideal conditions for the setting up, establishment and international competitiveness of biotech companies. Numerous biotechnological and medical technology companies have already set up today to complement the dense network of universities, higher education facilities, scientific institutes and technology and research centres and built up Bio-Tech-Clusters.

The region's major areas of research are medicine, agricultural and marine biotechnology. Greifswald is also the organisational headquarters of BioCon Valley, the life sciences initiative of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which, as a regional network between research, industry and administration, is successfully promoting the industrial use of modern biotechnologies. The transnational life sciences association "Scan-Balt" is helping the Baltic region to develop into one of the leading biotechnology regions in Europe.

Vorpommern is a region with a special cluster of institutions and companies of the health industry. The association "Vernetzte Gesundheit e.V." unites these single initiatives still more strongly with one another and with other industries and accomplishes for the use of synergies common development projects. On the island of Usedom united eight rehabilitation clinics to the "Usedomer Reha-Verbund", in order to increase the meaning of the rehabilitation on Usedom further and to make the present special offers still more well-known.
